Types of Spray Foam Insulation

We offer energy-efficient spray foam solutions for both open cell foam and closed cell foam. Depending on your insulation needs, we provide the best option for your property.

Open Cell Foam Insulation

Open cell foam for energy efficiency is ideal for reducing energy consumption while providing excellent acoustic and thermal insulation. Here’s why open cell foam is an excellent choice for many properties:

Flexible and Lightweight

Flexible open cell foam adapts to different spaces and provides an airtight seal that helps reduce air leaks.

Acoustic Benefits

Open cell foam helps with soundproofing which makes it ideal for homes and buildings that require noise reduction.

Sustainable Insulation Solutions

Sustainable open cell foam insulation supports eco-friendly building practices, contributing to a greener environment.

Cost-Effective

Open cell foam offers great value while still providing strong thermal performance.

Closed Cell Foam Insulation

For high-performance closed cell foam insulation, Alpha Insulation uses WALLTITE® from BASF, a premium foam system designed for walls and roofs. It provides an airtight seal and enhanced thermal properties:

High-Performance Insulation

Closed cell foam for energy-efficient buildings offers excellent thermal conductivity and air tightness.

Moisture Resistance

Insulation with closed cell foam prevents water penetration which makes it ideal for areas exposed to moisture or damp conditions.

Durable and Strong

Durable closed cell foam insulation adds strength and stability to your structure while enhancing energy efficiency.

Smooth Coverage

Unlike traditional insulation materials, closed cell foam for walls and roofs is spray-applied to ensure no joints or gaps.

FAQs

FAQs About Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation can last over 25 to 30 years, and in many cases, it can remain effective for the lifetime of the building if properly installed and protected from moisture or UV exposure.

Open-cell spray foam is soft, flexible, and ideal for interior spaces where soundproofing and breathability are important. It’s also more cost-effective, but less dense than closed-cell. Closed-cell spray foam, on the other hand, is rigid, moisture-resistant, and offers a higher R-value per inch—making it better suited for external walls, roofs, and areas exposed to damp or structural stress.

However, not all buildings are suitable for spray foam insulation. Some structures—particularly older properties or those with ventilation or moisture concerns—may require a thorough assessment before spray foam can be recommended. We always carry out a property survey to determine suitability and provide accurate costings based on your building's specific needs.

The main difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam insulation lies in their structure, performance, and applications:

Open-Cell Foam:

  • Has a softer, sponge-like texture.
  • Cells are not completely sealed, allowing air to fill the spaces.
  • Offers excellent soundproofing.
  • Has a lower R-value (around 3.5 per inch), so it's less insulating than closed-cell.
  • More affordable and ideal for interior walls and ceilings.

Closed-Cell Foam:

  • Much denser and rigid.
  • Cells are fully enclosed, creating a moisture barrier.
  • Higher R-value (around 6–7 per inch), making it more effective at insulating.
  • Adds structural strength and is great for exterior walls, roofs, and basements.
  • More expensive than open-cell foam.
While it’s technically possible to install spray foam yourself, it is strongly recommended to hire a certified professional for several important reasons:
Spray foam requires special equipment and protective gear to apply safely.

Proper installation is crucial to ensure even coverage, avoid gaps, and prevent issues like off-gassing or poor adhesion.
Professionals understand building regulations, ventilation needs, and how to assess your structure’s suitability.

Incorrect DIY application can lead to costly damage or health risks.
