Open Cell Spray Foam Concerns: What You Need to Know

There has been a growing concern over the installation of Open Cell Spray Foam to domestic roof structures. Mortgage companies have been hesitant on releasing monies for properties which have had Open Cell Spray Foam installed. Proof of Installation to Manufacturers instruction is required. We have briefly explained what Open Cell Spray foam is and outlined these concerns to reassure our customers of the measures we take to ensure confidence in our installation.

Open cell spray foam is made of tiny cells that aren’t completely sealed, allowing air to fill the spaces. This structure gives it a soft, sponge-like feel and excellent flexibility. When applied, the foam expands quickly and creates an airtight seal which helps to prevent heat loss and draughts. Unlike traditional insulation materials, open cell foam adapts to uneven surfaces and can insulate even the trickiest spaces like awkward roof pitches or tight wall cavities.

Concern 1: Is My Property Suitable for Open Cell Spray Foam?

All properties which are fitted with Open Cell Foam are surveyed by one of our specialists prior to works beginning to ensure suitability for the installation process. It is commonly used in various insulation projects including:

  • Loft and attic insulation
  • Pitched roof insulation
  • Internal walls and ceilings
  • Timber frame wall insulation
  • Cavity fill for sound reduction
  • Between floor joists

If your property is unsuitable, we will explain why and advise on an alternative solution to address your energy efficiency needs.

2. Compliance: Will Open Cell Spray Foam Restrict Sufficient Air Flow?

Properties are fitted with a vent card leaving a 50mm air gap to allow the felt to drape and sufficient airflow between the foam and the roof. This allows the roof trusses to breathe and is BS 5250 compliant. Some issues have arisen in the past as inexperienced installers have failed to address the recommended air flow guidelines. Our qualified installers ensure that all necessary processes and regulations are adhered to and provide a guarantee following installation.

3. Durability: Will Materials Degrade Over Time?

All zinc plated surfaces are sprayed with a fully tested and approved primer to ensure that the zinc does not corrode the foam after install. Open cell spray foam installation is a long lasting form of insulation

4. Open Cell Foam Installation Process

Once all preparatory work is completed, open cell spray foam is installed to the required depth and if necessary shaved back to allow boarding to take place.

5. Certified Works & Supporting Documentation

All our installations are NHBC and Building Control approved and Certification is provided upon completion and payment of installation.
